GENERATE

Each System begins with an original generative algorithm.

The code defines a set of rules rather than a fixed composition. It is then used to produce a large number of variations, revealing the visual possibilities contained within the System.

SELECT

Most generated images remain part of the research.

The System is explored over time until its formal vocabulary becomes familiar and its possibilities begin to feel exhausted. A small number of images are then selected to become Structures.

Selection is the moment when a temporary digital variation becomes the basis for a physical work.

MATRIX

The selected Structure is translated into a physical printing matrix.

A laser engraves the image into MDF, converting the digital structure into a surface capable of holding and transferring ink.

The matrix introduces its own constraints: scale, depth, material and the behaviour of the engraved surface all affect the final image.

INK

The matrix is inked by hand.

Ink is applied, adjusted and worked across the engraved surface. Small variations in quantity, pressure and distribution mean that the physical image is never a perfectly neutral reproduction of the digital source.

PRINT

Paper is placed onto the inked matrix and the image is transferred under pressure.

At this stage, the Structure acquires its final material form. The grain of the paper, the density of the ink and the small irregularities of printing become part of the work.

Each Structure is produced as a signed and numbered limited edition.
